In this episode we talk about Google Summer of Code, the recent launch of Blender Sync, upcoming Cloud services, and then we dive into the technology and behind the scenes of the Blender Cloud.
Warning: It can get a bit technical towards the end if you're not into web stuff, so bring a pillow and sleep over the boring bits.
In this podcast: Francesco, Pablo and Sybren
Hey guys, I have an idea. Hope you still read these.
Now people can upload projects into Blender cloud. Great. And you are going to integrate Attract into Blender cloud. Fabulous. Then how about the Flamenco? I mean, it would be great if user could drive the server/dispatcher part of the flamenco in the cloud, where the Attract and project already is. Then user and his friends could set up their render managers and workers and benefit the shared computational power.
And continuation idea: when the Flamenco dispatcher is in Blender cloud, it would be cool to have AWS linux-blender-flamenco image to boot some worker nodes and retrieve tasks from Blender cloud Flamenco.
What do you think?
Hey Pablo,
I have a quick question regarding VR rendering with Blender. I have been working on a stereo 360 video project, but I am having an issue with the 3D failing once you look to the sides and back of the equirectangular image. I have consulted as many online resources as I could and the best answer I could find is that there isn't really a solution yet (see: http://blender.stackexchange.com/questions/46132/anyway-to-create-a-360-stereoscopic-video-for-playback-in-vr)
With Cosmos Laundromat and Caminandes 3, VR images have both been successfully produced, so I was wondering how your team, especially with Caminandes, was able to solve the stereo problems currently present, and what the work around was.
Thanks!
@Keith Morgan: It should Just Work™ with Blender's multiview feature. I've added an answer at http://blender.stackexchange.com/a/57309/888, maybe it sheds some light on things.
@Andy Goralczyk: Thanks Andy! I'll crack it open here shortly!
@Keith Morgan: you can check out our exact workflow and settings in the Caminandes VR Demo file: https://cloud.blender.org/p/caminandes-3/574c4e89c379cf189c1fa1e4
Its set up exactly as we rendered it for Google.
@Dr. Sybren: I have tried using a single panoramic camera with the stereo setting changed to 'stereo 3D' in the views subpanel, as well as two panoramic cameras using 'multiview' and with both options I run into the issue of the perspective being reversed around the backside of the image. The best stereo 360 effect I've been able to pull off is rendering out a mono 360 image and the Z-pass, and feeding the Z-pass into the displacement map effect in After Effects. However, this method is hampered by aliasing issues...
I stayed to the end of the last podcast... do I win a prize? Regarding the Blender setup, sync feature. I think that it would be very useful for teams to have access to similar setups.
I am thinking about its use in school for younger kids. It would be great for a teacher to define a layout (and limited addons) for the whole class, so that everyone knows where to find the button or feature the teacher is talking about without having to search around regular complicated Blender. Would a teacher be able to add Grease Pencil notes back thru a synced project?
@David mcsween: Part of the 2.8 "The Workflow" project is more flexibility in the startup files, so that people can have multiple startup files for multiple workflows. Such a use case as you describe is what we also have in mind for this. Right now, with Blender Sync and the other Blender Cloud Addon features, we aim at the current version of Blender (2.77a), which doesn't have support for multiple startup files.
...What?, did you just say that you can take screenshots with blender?
Yeah! Ctr+F3, or from the menu Window > Save Screenshot. In the operator properties on the sidebar you can set 'Fullscreen' on/off for saving the area that was under the mouse when you hit the shortcut.
Huh I did't know that either @Luciano Muñoz:
@Pablo Vazquez: wow it was in front of me all this time!, damn!, thank you!
Regarding the flatty light theme, I found that it works Great for working during the day which is the way i like it, BUT!, the gradient of the background is too dark, and it messes a lot with looking over the wireframes, the only thing i have to fix for it is that background gradient and make it much brighter. Thanks for that theme, at least for daylight working is definitelly the best one.
Good point, will keep it in mind!
And yes, the light theme works best during the day. Since I use Blender at work then it makes sense to tweak it for business hours :) But I have plans for a dark version as well, once this is done.
