The answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything. Or, in other words: Blender Institute Podcast #42. This time is a long one, because there's so much going on! Blender Conference was massive with over 300 blenderheads going about. In other news, the Agent 327 team keeps growing, so with long overdue we interview Beau, generalist artist at Blender Institute. Plus updates on Blender Cloud, Attract, and much, much more!
Hey guys, sorry if this has been covered but three years ago Ton advised what I am guessing is that the game engine will no longer be developed, are there any plans to change this? I would like to get into game making but I would rather not start in BGE if it won't be there.. someday..
@Markom3D: According to Ton latest post (https://code.blender.org/2016/11/blender-2-8-project-status/) : the Blender Game Engine project might be getting a revival
@nafergo: brilliant. Thank you very much.
Great to have you guys back! Question @Hjalti and other animators: When animating, do you "record" all keyframes for one character in one single action, or do you also use e.g. linked actions (like walk cycles)? If so, how do you organise the action strips in the NLA editor (what goes to the top, what to the bottom), and what are the right "Blending" settings (add, replace)? As an example, I have a linked-in walk cycle. How do I set this all up if I need to modify a.) bones that are not animated in the linked action b.) bones that are already animated in the linked action? Many thanks! Thomas, Heidelberg
@brueckler: im jumping in since you're opening the door to other animators... honestly i cant use the NLA for animation, i've been able to use it only to test loops, but never to really mix up animation or use it as animation layers...
@brueckler: I just tried to use NLA to blend in some fixing poses for a character.. and for the life of me could NOT get it to work properly. :(
@jason: @luciano: In my current project, I have a lot of hopping rabbits. The hop is supposed to be rather monotonous - it follows a strict music beat. So I use the hop as a looped action I linked in from the character file. I then add another action in the actual scene in which I animate the arms and the face. Ideally, two tracks should be enough - one with the hop and one with the modifications. However, I haven't quite figured out how to use the blending options properly.
@luciano: I'm the same.. haven't used NLA for animating.. I tend to like to keep everything in one action, since it helps me catch mistakes like pops in the motion. If you're managing layers.. you have to go "find" errors and sometimes it's really hard to get them out.
Great conference, it's been my sencond (first one in 2010) and it was a pleasure meeting so many peeps from the community, hanging out, sharing stuff, looking at great strong presentations, and good bock texels beer.
Please don't take pepeland from us yet, still so much to learn from him on and off school =)... but yeah you can borrow him
The short list of the oscars will be announced in about a week or two.
I think you guys are doing a great job, even though you hjalti, my friend, seem a bit down or overwhelmed sometimes, you're doing it right, so i can't wait to see whats coming! Cheers to all of you, Thank you for such a great podcast and hearing about how you're working things out and how the team is growing so much and so tightly !
Great podcast! :)
Where exactly was Francesco? It would be cool if you share the video in a blog post.
I really missed you guys. The podcast is, by far, the best way to stay up to date of Blender development and studio status.
I've checked Attract and it looks very promising :) By the way, the XML/EDL feature that Colin (I think it was him) suggested it's a very good idea.
