OLD POST:
Note: Grease Pencil is on a very early stage of development. Start by adding a Grease Pencil object and play with the brushes, tools, palettes, and don't forget to check out the new modifiers. It's all work in progress but quite fun to play with. Just like in 2.7x, there is no specific workspace/layout for 2D animation yet. The tools are there you just need to dig through the panels. We are working on it to make 2D animation as accessible as possible. Feedback is welcome! Which tools do you use the most?
But a build is nothing without something to play with! Download and get your hands dirty with two early sneak-peek samples files from Hero. Animated by Javier Salvador and Sergi Miranda.

Works OK with the version on GraphicAll but with B2.8 alpha - I've loaded the file but I don't see any figures only the beige background. Am I doing something silly ?
Since February is not possible to download Blender Grease pencil from Graphic all ¿Is there other way to get this branch?
I've never compiled anything. Well, I did compile a JAVA "Hello World" once, but that probably doesn't count. Anyway, is it hard? Can a novice do it? I'd like to try to compile a Linux version of the greasepencil-object.
Congratulations to all involved the people ! i discovered blender just last week and i subscribed just now to post this ! ahah After hours of testing the branch, i'm just wondering : is the Greace Pencil rendering working on OpenGL only ?It would be so awesome to mix the drawing with the "classic" render, where we can use projection mapping, for instance. If the artists could create their backgrounds on their favourite third party softwares and then project them on 3D models in Blender with flat lighting to keep the 2d drawing feel, that would make Blender capable of creating Disney quality shots !
I am a self-taugh hobbyist illustrator, and to achieve that i had to learn After Effects + Cinema 4d + Clip Studio Paint animation. This is the result, on my instagram : https://www.instagram.com/p/BegRkFaHyQO. Too many softwares involed for such a simple animation idea. If this could be achieved using only Blender, i promise you, this software will be best ever !
@Douze: By the moment the F12 rendering in not working with grease pencil.
@Douze: At the present time, it isn't all that hard to work around this issue. Blender's Internal render is particularly good at handling the kind of toon shading in the video you posted. Blender Internal (BI) can't do raytracing in OpenGL renders, but it can do some pretty good shadows using buffer shadows. I actually prefer the old BI for toon shading.
And if you need real-time raytracing or PBR rendering, look at the Eevee branch.
Finally, I'd recommend against doing any important work in an unstable pre-release build unless you're capable of handling bugs or willing to lose time and progress by working around them or waiting for the devs to fix them. A lot of what you want can be done in the stable 2.79 build. It's grease pencil doesn't have the bells and whistles, but it is a lot more stable.
@Daniel Martinez Lara: maybe transparent .png sequence rendering in OpenGL will do the trick ! :-) So we can render the background separately !
@Daniel Martinez Lara: thanks for the reply ! it would be great to make it work someday, but the current version is already awesome. Keep un the good work !
I don't see grease pencil keyframes in the dopesheet.
@Boonsak Watanavisit: Do have you a intel card? there is a bug with intel cards, don´t show any kind of key frame
@Daniel Martinez Lara: i'm not sure why an intel bug would cause a particular type of keyframe to not show in dopesheet vs. another....doesn't make sense....sounds more like a blender grease pencil bug, not an intel bug...
@Daniel Martinez Lara: yes, it's on surface Pro 3. T_T
Hi , I'm playing with this build, but I notice the color difference between viewport and render. is that normal behavior?
@Boonsak Watanavisit: Nevermind, I just read the previous post. haha.
@Daniel Martinez Lara: It's more fun playing around with this version. https://youtu.be/oITtpOf_orI
I have suggestion for a useful feature - 'Feather Edge' that blurs the stroke unevenly according to some handle. It could work the same way as Mask in Motion Tracking mode. Could be useful when you want to make soft shade or quick paint some background.
@Boonsak Watanavisit: : :))) one tip, you can see atialliasing in viewport if you set multisample option in user preferences
This is great! Very fun to play with. Thanks! Any reason why OpenGL renders come out more bright? Just a bug or feature?
@Sacha Goedegebure: almos a bug :) you need put the dispaly color manegement to "None"
niiice!
