Last week on Pet Projects…
The team gathered to start the discussions on lighting: Rik and Vivien shared what they had in mind while Simon and Andy thought of ways to turn those ideas into shots. To go for the 2D cartoon look, what should we keep? Should we go for simplicity, take out all the shadows and only add some we would reshape? Should we use sharper shapes or fade out?
We'll put a pin in the lighting talk for now and focus on the assets and animation tasks! We sure need those to move forward if we want to be able to light anything... Demeter focused solely on the facial rig of the Dog, working on all the technical details to make sure we can bring the cartoony expressions to life.
Beau and Vivien continued working on the Rocket Interior, adding more and more details to the whole cockpit. As it is the film's main set, it is now becoming urgent to have a finalized version so animators can work in a stable environment. If all goes well, the modeling should be finished in a couple of days and then allow for many shots to be greenlight for layout and then animation.
Last but not least - and even though it's technically not from last week - everyone can now enjoy the first Video Log of our project, thanks to Haru and his sneaky skills.
Pet Projects is currently in pre-production and the progress can be followed here on the Blender Studio website.

EDIT: A previous version of this article was titled Production Recap March 17th to 20th - as we don't work over the weekend (this producer promises it), it has been corrected. The original URL remains unchanged to keep all links functioning.
Demeter is turning into a rigging god by the day. 😮
