Ellie, the nature-loving British teenager, wielder of meatsticks and slayer of Sprites is ready to rip and tear, until it is done!
This asset currently requires Blender 3.3-3.6, and may break on lower or higher versions!
If you have run into any problems, let us know in the comments below, and if you make something cool with her, make sure to show it to us!
This has been super helpful in learning how CloudRig worked back in the day which makes me wonder if the sprite fright rigs will ever be updates to 4.1 and up at some point? Been breaking down how everything works for a bit now for projects I'm working on so thank you for sharing these rigs!
@KSDN Hey there, there's no plans at the moment but if there's a demand for it, I might do this the easy way by just deleting the old layers UI, re-organizing the bone collections, and calling it done. Actually upgrading the rig to be able to generate with modern CloudRig would be a massive effort, sevenfold, so that's definitely off the table, but I don't think it would be necessary anyways.
@Demeter Dzadik Thanks for the answer! Makes sense it's not a priority right now and it's great to see Rain and Snow being updated to the new version. Yeah I think something like bone collections and a working Bone layer UI would be all that's needed, everything else seems to actually work fine still.
Hi, I'm pretty new to advance rigging, How could we make the particule follow the rigged mesh hair? (so that we can animate hair and fake the dynamism) and Is the old hair systeme heavier than the new hair system?
@AMBININTSOA Heya! I'm pretty sure the old hair system we used here is a lot worse in most ways, yes. What we used to deform the hair strands was a python script that runs every frame, which you can find in the file if you open a text editor. The script nudges the particle points to the positions of a vertex mesh, which can be rigged as normal. There was a second python script to generate said vertex mesh based on the particles. I believe that is also included.
is there any tutorials on how to use the rigs and animating?
@morangabeavon Not necessarily a tutorial per se, but on the Blender Studio youtube channel, there is a livestream recording of Rik using one of the Sprite Fright rigs to make a short animation.
Thanks for the help everyone. I have another question: I'm trying to make a "child of" object constraint to have an Empty object (locator) parented to one of Ellie's bones ("MSTR-Spine_Torso"). However, I can't find that bone, or any bones, in the Target menu of the Empty object's constraint; just GEOs and LTCs. Can anyone tell me my mistake?
@Ian Gaffey First you need to select the rig object, called RIG-ellie. Then you can select a bone, as a sub-target selector will appear.
Another question: I'm trying to mirror the relaxed hand pose from the asset library onto the other hand. But when I follow online instructions to mirror the pose, nothing happens. What's the proper way to do this?
@Ian Gaffey In 3.6 and below, there should be a checkmark at the top of the pose library for mirroring. In 4.0, there is an Apply Flipped option in the re-do panel after clicking on a pose in the asset shelf.
Help!!! I switched to side view and Ellie's hair disappeared. The controls are still visible but the geometry itself is gone. How do I get it back?
@Ian Gaffey Hey. There are a lot of ways to hide things in Blender. Maybe you pressed H with the hair selected, or disabled its collection in the outliner somehow. Try pressing Alt+H in object mode, or look through the outliner for the eye icon, screen icon, or checkmark icon being disabled on the hair object or its collection.
@Demeter Dzadik I figured it out, thanks. I'm pretty new to Blender
I'm trying to get my head around how you move the pupils in the eyes. I see the shape keys and understand that but, I'm used to seeing eyes that are round like balls that you rotate to get the character to look in different directions but, this is really an odd shape eye that obviously doesn't rotate so, are you having to work purely on shape keys and adjust the geometry, then set the shape key? Given the shape of the eye, it seems it would be tough to not mess up the eye shape completely.
@Wayne Batchelor It's originally a sphere, and it rotates. It gets squashed after the rotation. It's just a Lattice modifier. Simple as that. :) If you disable the Lattice modifier on the eye, you can see that it's a sphere.
@Demeter Dzadik Ahhhh, verrry clever!
Regenerating the cloud rig fails as of 3.3 LTS with this error: Execution of post-generation script in text datablock "ellie_post_generation.py" failed, see stack trace below. File "", line 3, in AttributeError: module 'rigify.feature_sets.CloudRig_3_0_3_1.rigs' has no attribute 'sprite_fright'
@Bloopert Thanks, I'll try to see if this can be solved but, I don't guarantee that future versions of CloudRig will forever stay backwards compatible with older rigs.
Is there a specific style you were going for while making sprite fright.
@Felix H Yeah, we were going for a muppet-like, stop-mo style sort of thing.
Can I use this character in my showreel ?
@ibram saad Sorry for late reply but yes, absolutely.
@Demeter Dzadik Thanks
@Demeter Dzadik Hi! I would like to know how is the particles hair rigged. I found the scalp mesh, and some meshes with strands made of vertices, but I couldn't find nothing special about the particle systems, that make the particles follow the bones or the meshes
@Edwin Hernandez There's a script that we hacked together, it should be in the file, but the crappiness of this whole workflow is why the new hair system is being worked on right now, two desks away from mine, with VERY promising results so far. :) So we have no plans to go into more detail on how we did the hair on SF since it was a nightmare and a disaster, but keep an eye out for the new Hair system coming soon(tm) to a Blender near you!
I noticed there's a script included that has a way to attach hair to a rigged proxy mesh. I noticed there's a "to do" at the end of the script, hopefully, that script is still being worked on and someone could do a full rundown on how we could do the same with our own projects? I saw someone on YouTube find out how to use it, but I am wondering if there's more functionality to it, or if there's an easier way instead of converting the particles into a curve.
@Joel "Floreum" That script was a bit of a hackjob by Sergey, me and Simon. I would recommend to wait for the upcoming hair improvements to Blender, and hope that rigging hair to bones will be possible to do in a less hacky (and low performance) fashion in the near future!
Hi, I followed the instruction on how to append the rig, but I wasn't able to click on the Make Library Override. When I tried to link the rig, I was able to click on the Make Library Override. but the pose library didn't show up after I saved and reload the scene. I wonder if it's because I am using version 3.1?? Should I revert to version 3.0?
@garythehsu The pose library isn't attached to the rig, so it doesn't come along with it when linked or appended. What you want to do is to add the filepath of the original snow.blend file to your Asset Library filepaths in your user preferences.
Is there a reason why literally no addons or plugins are working with this character in v3.0?
@Markus Weber Sorry I missed your comment, this is the first time I hear such an issue, try checking the terminal/system console for any script errors.
This is great thanks, and thanks for the model, this will allow me to start having a much better understanding of animation rigging.
The texture is off its like green and glitchy how do i fix the problem
@Nadzirah Ong Missing textures should be indicated by pink colors, so green and glitchy sounds to me like a graphics card/driver issue?
Hello guys, I only get like a new file with the default scene for any of these characters I download!Help!
@gabrfav Hey, are you using Blender 3.0? It is now the official latest stable Blender version, so you can download it from blender.org directly.
@Demeter Dzadik didin't get was working only with 3.0!thanks all working now
im having a problem with the lower teeth https://i.gyazo.com/5bd5280099eda6060fec0b776158394f.png how could i fix this?
@Diego Hooton It should be fixed in a sneaky update, try re-downloading!
@Demeter Dzadik hmm for some reason it doesnt seem to be fixed
@Demeter Dzadik oh ok, thanks!
@Demeter Dzadik I have the same issue. Just downloaded it today, using a Mac M1 and most recent Blender 3.0.0
@Arnold@googoo.nl @Diego Hooton It is now un-fixed, since the bug causing the teeth issue in the first place now got fixed in Blender 3.0 and 3.1.
@Demeter Dzadik Downloaded blender and the rig again. It's looking good now! Thanks for keeping us updated.
Thaks for sharing a qute little girl Character!!!! I have a question though, How I can use the finger grasp controller? Is this rig doesn't have it or just i missed it and don't know using proper way...?
@1uckysh00v There is no single control for putting the finger in a grabbing or fist clench pose, you would have to pose the fingers individually, or apply the pose from the pose library, which you can do by enabling the Pose Library in the addons list.
Can you guys try to append the Ellie collection (CH-ellie) in a new blend file. Every time i append it to a new project textures are broken, they rendered grey. Am i missing something?
@Erick Nyandu Kabongo Yes i m using the latest blender 3.1.0 alpha
@Erick Nyandu Kabongo Sounds odd. If the textures work when you open the file directly, they should also work when you append the character. Maybe it's just a Blender bug, or your graphics card is no longer supported?
@Demeter Dzadik I believe there some problem with the way the files are packed, here is the screen of the blender when the file is appended into a new blend file (not saved) https://pasteall.org/pic/dd475794b4ce40a69f6730a71cac3961 And after i rendered i get this one https://pasteall.org/pic/7eb428f8bc8f4b749e176c3522988bab and the original file gives me render like this https://pasteall.org/pic/874502a39a814fd58bf59ee1dd264e99
@Erick Nyandu Kabongo Thanks! It should be fixed now, if you re-download.
@Demeter Dzadik nope, the problem is there. Nothing has changed, i m getting the same warning message at the beginning and the same render. Why you guys don't pack all the needed file on the separate folder? I m suspecting that you are relying too much on some scripts, and since I don't have those script locally i m encountering this problem. Try to a new blend: file-> load factory settings and then append CH-ellie, change the renderer to Cycles and then render it. I have tried this in 2 different computers and the problem is still there.
@Erick Nyandu Kabongo So, I learned something today. Apparently packed libraries cannot be appended, so everything must be made local. Thanks for letting me know, it should really work now. I also made a report about this: https://developer.blender.org/T93282
@Demeter Dzadik You did it, now it renders well with all the textures in place. Can you please update Rex .blend file as well?
@Erick Nyandu Kabongo It will be better to upload the blend with texture folder separated and other folders separated and zipped them altogether.
@Erick Nyandu Kabongo Argh, the Enter-key keeps submitting my text in the middle Argh.
I opened the Ellie character with Blender 3.0 Beta (11/04)and enabled Python. Everything is as opened from the download. Ellie's face won't pose when I click on the asset thumbnails. If I right click on the thumbnail, shouldn't I see an 'Assign' option? Am I doing something wrong?
@Chris Clawson It is a bit confusing, things behave differently depending on if you're browsing the poses through the Pose Library UI or the Asset Browser. I changed the UI layout in the file to show the Pose Library UI by default, that should behave how you expect. However, make sure the Pose Library addon is enabled, and that you don't select any bones, since then the pose assignment will only work on selected bones.
@Demeter Dzadik -YES! Thank You. The included Pose Library plugin needs to be enabled. I think that should be mentioned in the "Readme" notes. I have been a Blenderhead since 1999, but I am just recently getting back into animation. These new animation concepts are a real challenge to get back into but this may be a great time to do it.
For some reason the legs deform really weird whenever i pose them in fk and use the IK to FK snap button. The thighs scale up and the foot rotates in the opposite direction.
@Simon Whoops, good catch, it should be fixed now.
I have Blender 2.93 and the character is not working. I downloaded it and when I open the .blend it gives the error. ´ bpy.context.space_data.system_bookmarks_active = 2 File format is not supported in file C:user\Documents\Blender\elie.blend'
@Juan Luis Diaz Mora The rig will not work in 2.93, you need 3.0.
@Sybren A. Stüvel ok got it, downloading version 3 :). Thanks.
Thx so much for the rig it is fantastic ! If one animator could make a little demo of how to use the rig that would be awesome. I know my way around with Auto-Rig Pro addon but never use ''rigify'' before, so I'm not sure how to switch fk/ik ect... Maybe not now, but when most rig would be release.
@Francis Jasmin Ohh, sorry, the CloudRig script didn't executed first time. Now I see the menu.
