In the first episode of this short series about weight painting in Blender, I go over some very fundamental concepts such as vertex groups and normalization, the latter of which can cause a lot of confusion when you're starting out.
what is the shortcut for selecting the mirrior side bones ?
@Sorin Salcianu I think in Blender default it is now Ctrl+M, but I changed it to Ctrl+F.
@Demeter Dzadik I went a step further and use just F, with Shift-F to extend the selection to the mirror :)
Thank you for making this. This might not be the most exciting information (or it might be if you are a real nerd like me!), but it is SO important. I am sick and tired of sloppy deformations on my meshes. I hope this series helps.
I'm having the compulsion to click on like somewhere. I came here to (re)learn the very basics of rigging and never really knew how the weight painting workflow is meant to be efficiently used. So while this video might seem almost trivial to the ones in the know, it's so very helpful for the uninitiated. Very on point, well delivered. Thank you very much!
Hi, great series! Question, how come when I select the armature, shift select the mesh, and enter weight paint mode, I am still not able to select the individual bones to active the corresponding vertex groups? Thank you!
@coolyan2016 As far as I know, this should only happen when the mesh does not have an Armature modifier targetting the selected armature.
This was actually SO helpful thank you VERY much!!!
I needed this soooo much. Thank you!
I thought I knew the super basics, but no ! But now I do - thanks Demeter!
Excellent explanation of the rudimentary concepts :) Thank you!
@Demeter Dzadik --- Very nice job! Always seeking a better way to skin models, I've viewed many many tutorials on weight painting. Finally someone took the time to explain in detail how it actually works. Thank you.
Why isn’t the Zero Weights always active!! That’s a life changing option I didn’t know existed :D Maybe the default should be changed for the next version of Blender?
amazing tutorial. it looks like that the default painting mode is not very well optimized.
i'm having trouble with the audio
@Huân Lê-Vương Sorry, this is probably because this first episode was recorded during Lockdown, so I didn't have a proper set-up, and was just recording with my headset mic. Hopefully the other two episodes sound a bit better!
@Demeter Dzadik The second episode has perfect audio. The third episode sounds weird (it's picking up a lot of non-linguistic mouth sounds, for example) but it's loud enough so that's good. On a more positive note, even if the audios were as bad as the first episode I would watch them because the content is worth it.
It was very informative. Even this experienced weight-painter learned a few tricks. I would not call this "boring" theory. Great quality training for beginner and advanced.
Excellent tutorial, it was sorely needed. Thank you. Could you please include the .blend file you are using in the video though. Digging around in the Coffee Run rig from the repository is way to complicated/advanced. Then we can see the weighting and the blurring on the joints for example. Also It would save a lot of time not having to loop parts of the video many times because it went by to fast. Instead we could just quickly go into the .blend and see what you did. Thanks and keep up the good work.
*@mikael* Thank you, very good points. I've added a download to the simplified Hailey blend file to the description of Part 2.
*@Demeter Dzadik* Thank you! I'm trying to find a good weight reference for a female character. Do you know which weighted character on the cloud comes closest to a realistic female?
*@mikael* I suppose Sintel, but she's still very far from realistic unfortunately :p
The basics explained clearly and concisely. Thanks for this series!
