After 20 years of short films, Blender Studio is ready to tackle an ambitious new project: a feature film!
Support the studio team as they develop a great story and build a free, open source playbook for creating large-scale animated productions.
Join 5181 people who already support Blender Studio to create open content and open-source tools, and help us get to the target of 7000 studio subscribers!
This project is not only about making the feature film itself, but also about documenting and sharing the production process and knowledge.
We want to see filmmakers worldwide building on top of it and steering the industry back to human-forward art with a heart.
It's possible to be productive today while staying true to the craft, and the production of a feature film is Blender Studio's way to prove it.
While the scale of this project is much greater, the core principle stays the same: subscribers are the ones who make Open Movies go from concept to production.
We did the math: 7000 subscribers is the lucky number needed to enable us to develop the pitch and move film production forward. We are not starting from scratch, though. Blender Studio already has 5181 subscribers!
Co-directors Hjalti Hjálmarsson and Rik Schutte set the scene of OVERGROWN in a post-human robo-apocalyptic world reclaimed by nature. As the unlikely family duo survives in the brave new world, their adventure unfolds into a fast-paced river of hardship, wonder, and personal transformation.
By supporting this project, you'll be getting access to open source tools and production knowledge.
The ultimate goal is to build a set of open source and well documented productivity tools that can be combined into a feature-film pipeline. This way, instead of starting from scratch, the independent community of filmmakers will always have the Blender Studio “playbook” to study, reference, and build on top of for their own projects.
We want small teams to be fully empowered to pursue ambitious creative ideas!
Training and tutorials have always been among the most-requested content types for Blender Studio. While working on OVERGROWN, we also aim on developing and sharing in-depth tutorials. There can't be advanced, production-grade training without production! The shared knowledge base will include, among other things:
Subscribe to access invaluable production knowledge from Blender Studio artists, while securing Blender's future. Inspect 3D processes, learn efficient workflows, and unlock inspiration. On top of that, you can follow the project as it happens!

The OVERGROWN plan uses a 20/80 funding model. Blender Studio raises 20% through subscriber support, covering visual development and all the software and pipeline work needed to get the film off the ground. All the tools built will be released as free and open source, as usual.
The result of the early visual development will be used to involve an external party: a producer or distributor willing to finance the remaining 80%. This way, the Studio and community fund what they're most focused on (visual development, tech, and pipeline), while the heavy production lift is externally financed.
If Blender Studio reaches 7000 subscribers by September, the story of OVERGROWN will continue. With enough support behind us, we'll be in a strong position to secure the required funding for the feature film production.
As we wrap up the exploration phase, Blender Studio will now work on a teaser scene to present how we imagine OVERGROWN. Follow our production updates as the team works on it, and stay tuned for the reveal in September.
Blender Studio is a team of artists and developers working within the Blender project, focused on creating cutting-edge content, sharing production knowledge, testing and contributing improvements to the latest in-development version of Blender. This process is called content-driven development, and has been a core part of the Blender projects since 2006.
