In this last timelapse video it's all about finishing the clothing pieces with the scarf and going over some important adjustments before continuing with further steps in the character creation workflow.
Hey, Julien! Thanks for putting this all together. Still working my way through the course. It's great! I'm learning a ton. By chance, is there a chapter for UV Unwrapping or Final Texturing? Or do you have any suggestions of useful tutorials? Also I agree a rigging tutorial would be awesome. Either way thanks for all your hard work. I know a lot of people appreciate it!
@ben.gerberick Thanks! I'm glad you like the tutorials. I will likely soon get some time to wrap up the course with some last videos on UV unwrapping, shading and rendering since the current movie production of Sprite Fright is coming to a close. So there are still some tutorials coming. Until then here are some good videos on the topics: - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L3654VGZObg - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TMPjKVgTfYs - https://cloud.blender.org/films/spring/5b8d0af35152ba3f26d2d907/?asset=787 - https://cloud.blender.org/training/anglerfish/5d7915bb7cab2a47b38cd527/ - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D7kuKx7BV1A&list=PLav47HAVZMjm5_9jgNS3zRFePI4YQGpQc
@Julien Kaspar Awesome! Thanks so much for replying! I'm going to check these out right away! Also, can't wait to see Sprite Fright! Looks amazing. Once again thanks for putting this course together. I
I've learned so much about workflow. We all appreciate it, Julien. Keep up the good work! I know you must be busy with all your projects.
can you recommend what i learn next?
can you please see my work and tell me what i am doing wrong and how i improve https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/12yWZAzJIJdEIhJ_Fadpn8MRDarQGGmsQ?usp=sharing
@jyotish kumar A lot of it already looks really great! Amazing job! One thing that will improve the the character overall is to adjust the overall proportions. The head is tiny in comparison to the rest and the further you go don the larger the limbs seem to get. Look at some body proportion references and resize the body proportions. To not destroy the shapekeys I recommend to separate the head from the rest of the body into its own object, and scale it in object mode instead of edit mode, and then reattach it. You can do the same to the limbs to test out different proportions quickly and then attach them again.
https://imgur.com/q0KTXit Here is my final product. I have made so many mistakes (anatomically and technically) but every problem solving (mostly by Julien) contributed to my progress in blender. Tomorrow, I will start learning rigging, UV wrapping and texturing because I want to export my character into a game engine. Apart from this, I really appreciate the effort put into this course. Thanks a lot Julien for all the help!
Everything was really the best. But since not only Rain modeling but also rigging is the best.
@dmdsik It's sad that I can't see the rigging process, but it's just my wish. Thank you for showing us a great process.
Hello Julien Didn't you promised, to show us how to UV unwrap texture and then the basics on rig it?
Because I can't find any video on that anywhere
@david.toarniczky The plan was to add more chapters on UVs, surfacing and then posing & rendering. I never managed to finish it so far and instead now have to work on the new Blender Open Movie project Sprite Fright. In the introduction I explicitly say that I won't go over rigging though.
@Julien Kaspar I actually meant with rigging the posing by the way do you know where I can learn how to make a complex rig that would be very helpful and I somehow can't add pictures of my character I did which I wanted to show you a long time ago I'm currently working on the retopo and I would love to have some feedback on my character. Thanks by the way your course was so far very helpful and I hope you can finish your course after the spring open movie Projekt.
@david.toarniczky There are some rigging tutorials out there that you can check out. If you want to share your progress you can also attach a link to a comment and that's also fine ;)
@Julien Kaspar Here are two links to google chrome for my character I already retopo the face so I hope I don't have to make major big changes there. I would love to hear some feedback and I hope you like it. (and I hope the link works properly) file:///Users/julianaherrero/Desktop/Screenshot%202021-02-20%20at%2012.01.39.png file:///Users/julianaherrero/Desktop/Screenshot%202021-02-20%20at%2012.02.32.png (just copy paste it into chrome)
@david.toarniczky Sorry but you need to upload the images somewhere on the internet. This could be dropbox, google drive or anything else. The links you shared are just where it is located on your hard drive ;)
@Julien Kaspar ups here you are google drive https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1j11SPT6ECBgVN8G3fIYVOZQqkYdeDUfm?usp=sharing
@david.toarniczky You need to give permission to anyone who has access to the link. It's restricted, I can't view it.
EDIT: I just send a request if you want to keep it private.
@Julien Kaspar Thanks for the request. I have just grant you permission to access the folder.
@david.toarniczky I like how far you got with the character already and I hope you learned a lot from the tutorials. But my top advice would be to focus on the design & sculpting part a bit more instead of retopology, UVs and rigging. There is a lack of definition in the anatomy & clothing but at the same time very small details like the zipper and laces. Try to focus on the bigger shapes first before going into detail.
You can finish this character to the point that you like and start with the next project. Keep your projects short & goals low to keep yourself motivated, keep learning and have fun.
If you are struggling with figuring the character design out by yourself I can highly recommend to look at some concept art and sculpt that. It is a highly informative & rewarding experience to just focus on translating a 2D artwork into 3D instead of inventing a new 3D design yourself. And you will learn more about design that way too.
@Julien Kaspar Thanks a lot for your tips I will keep them in mind in the next project.
Well done, Julien! It's not often that good artists are also good teachers. I've tried making a tutorial once, and I can only guess how much effort you put into this course. Courses of this quality are very expensive! Thank you so much
I have got useful knowledge, thank you so much for this big project you did for us. However, in the overview of the course and also the last video , ch 4, timelapse, you said that you will teach us also rigging as well as uv mapping. Will you add these chapters in the future?
It's planned that eventually more chapters on UV mapping, texturing, shading, posing & presentation would be added. For now we moved on to other projects and I will return to the course once I have time again. I'm always available in the comments though ;)
I've used Rigify to rig my model, and I'm trying to figure out how to properly open the eye (since in the course we re-topologized it closed) but it opens very weirdly. From the picture below, there is a lot of.. loose, how do I fix that?
*@Giovanni Coakley* Sorry but rigging will not be part of this course and I don't have any answers for that :(
So what do we do from here?
*@Giovanni Coakley* I really wish this series continued as well. I know Julien has commented on this being the final segment to this course and the UV maps, rigging, and animation won't be included which is a huge bummer.
*@spencerprice10* This is it for now at least. These first 4 chapters are at least giving a good overview on the modeling & 3D design part of the character creation and are already a lot of material.
More chapters on UV mapping, texturing, posing (not rigging) and rendering (presenting your character) are planned but I ran out of time to work on them.
*@Julien Kaspar* Don't get me wrong, Julien. I think this series is the best on the Blender Cloud. It just feels incomplete after watching the youtube video of Rain's development that included glimpses of UV mapping, texturing, posing, and rendering. You're amazingly talented, Julien. I am grateful for what you offered us.
Hi Julien, just wondering, when you rigged rain did you scale down the model or you stay at a world scale of 10? thanks for this awesome series
*@jayson* Thanks! Once I get into finishing the sculpt or retopology I start adjusting the world scale. During sculpting it doesn't really matter but afterwards it's very important.
This series of trainings is one of the best I have seen, really professional. But is it complete? I miss the rigging with Rigify for instance
*@Erik Dahlbäck* There was the plan to add 4 more chapters about UV mapping, surfacing, posing and rendering/presentation.
Unfortunately I ran out of time to finish those chapters so they will be released at some other time, possibly together with a second character :)
I would like to echo the sentiment of others here and thank you for putting together such a comprehensive and detailed tutorial series, I'm sure I'll be returning to it for reference many times in the future.
I went a bit rogue with the topology (I wanted to bake normals) but I'm supremely pleased to get to push a character all the way through sculpting + retopology.
Thanks again for going above and beyond for this series! Can't wait to check out speed sculpting!
*@Stephen Forsyth* Thanks a lot Stephen! I'm glad you liked it.
Thanks so much for this series! It's been an invaluable asset in my own work. I've downloaded and digested every inch of the models provided, and I thank you so much for those! I look forward to the rest of the series being posted (I assume there will be for all 7 models posted)
I could use help understanding how you got the UVs to come out so perfect in Rain File 4. I've marked the seams similar to how Rain is set up. However, when I unwrap my model, the UV map in the face gets twisted. All my scales are set at 1. Rain has a perfectly symmetrical UV map for her face. What am I missing to get my UVs symmetrical? I'd be happy to share an screengrab to show my problem if it helps.
Thank you again!
*@Jay Wagner* Thanks! I'm glad you like it. I hope I can get to work more on the 5th chapter soon. 8 chapters are planned (UVs, texturing & shading, posing, presentation & rendering)
There are 2 tips for getting more symmetrical UVs that I use often.
The result could have some more stretching but will almost always fix the asymmetry if the model and seams are symmetrical.
2. Use the Magic UV addon to select one side of the face and mirror the UVs automatically. For this you need to align the center loop in the middle of the UV map.
The addon is available here:

This has been an incredible journey. I have made an awesome female character but need to do a little work on my fingers. Now, I know you won't be doing any animation here but, by chance will you please do your rigging and animation in a separate course. I have kept my membership for months here only to follow you step by step. If you make a separate paid for course outside of this I am willing to pay for that as well. Please and thank you for your teachings.
*@mrjessecunningham* I'm so glad you finished and enjoyed it! It's been quite a journey for me too ^^
I hope the character animation part will be added to the Animation Fundamentals Course at some point by using this character I made but there's still no plan for a rigging course but I'll talk to people about it. It's a really popular request.
Maybe the Introduction to Rigging is still usable. It's using a 7 year old Blender version but apart from the interface not much should've changed in the rigging workflow & basic.
